Q1 - What is Avastar and where did the idea come from?
A1 - Everyone knows what an Avatar is in relation to computers and self identification, but the word avatar is an ancient word and actually means when a deity takes possession of an earth body, it seemed natural to me that the reversal of that would also be true, that each star is actually a human life and it's brightness is a reflection of that soul. You know there are a lot of stars out there, and are we not truly beings of light and darkness, would are true home not be space?!?, it makes sense to me. Q2 - So how did all that turn into a musical score? A2 - well most of the thoughts and metaphors have been building in me over many life times, but the key moment when I decided to do this was actually following a path of creating a different style of music. i listen to a lot and I mean a lot of music, and it seems even new bands fall into a specific genre, and even worse, it seems to me that most of the new music I here sounds just like the old music I've heard and it makes me feel like I'm living in a never ending cycle. So the premis was simple to create music that was so untraditional it could not be placed in any current genre of music. I set about this task using the pianoforte, and it was important that the piece sounded fresh, so each musical tack is a single take piano improv, and I based it around a simple slow theme that became the motif for the album. Q3 - the album has 30 songs, how long did it take you to record the music? A3 - The music part, meaning the pianoforte took 3 days, roughly 4 hours per day, the lyrics and vocals however, don't ask . . . Q4 - with such a radical departure from traditional song writing do you think Avastar will find an audience? A4 - I think an audience will find Avastar, I believe there are a lot of people that are just as tired of the same ol stuff that is already out there, don't get me wrong a lot of it is great stuff with tremendous talent behind it, but at the end of the day sometimes you just want something a little different, I'm not here to replace anyone's meal, just offering a snack, one that satisfies!
